Enzo Favata

Made In Sardinia

Castelsardo is a fishing village in the north of Sardinia. Here, at "Castello dei Doria" was to be the recording of "Made In Sardinia", the sequel to ENZO FAVATA'S Jazz 'n' World Project "Voyage En Sardaigne" in 1997 which is dedicated to the ethnic music of his island.

Some of the musical compositions for this project follow the style of traditional pieces of the traditional Sardinian polyphony. Other compositions are the transformation of thoughts emerging in the midst of this severe landscape which he has already shared for many years with the musicians he usually works with.

He worked with the most diverse instruments such as his saxophones of course, the piano, launeddas, (a triple bunch of reed pipes played only by circular breathing) electric guitars, mixed sound samples, employed the traditional trunfa (Sardinian wind harp) and traditional drums, normal drum set, percussion as well as clarinet and double bass, combined with the Sardinian tenores, the tenor choirs and voices from the distant past like the stones of the nuraghes.

Enzo Favata was the first to submit Sardinian music to an all-embracing personal reflection in his CD entitled "Voyage en Sardaigne" in 1997. It was clear to him that the illustrious heritage, counted not in hundreds of years but thousands of years, would be impossible to comprehend on one CD only. Jazz as the most open of all musical forms is Favata's socialisation. Therefore his roots are coming from Archie Shepp, John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders and not from the Folklore.

Favata records moods and motifs of Sardinian music, makes obvious comments on them where tenors and launeddas are present, or creates fantastic metamorphoses for them, of course also of the sound. The way in which it and Favata's silky soprano saxophone pick up the launedda motifs and gently transform them into jazz phrases for example in "Isola" (track 9), and or the way in which the same instruments prepare the atmosphere in "Boche e Notte" (track 1) for the entry of the "tenores" is pure magic.

Enzo Favata was born in the Catalanian city of Alghero in North-West-Sardinia. Curiosity moved him from playing in traditional bands to experimenting with electronic music and composing film music. Innumerable performances at festivals and awards followed. His most famaous CDs so far are: "Voyage en Sardaigne" (il manifesto), "ajò" (New Tone) with Dino Saluzzi, "islà" (New Tone) and "Atlantico" (il manifesto).
